Northwest Detroit

The northwest area is comprised of 10 US Census tracts and includes the Berg-Lahser, Brightmoor, Old Redford and Riverdale neighborhoods. According to the 2000 US Census,200px-redfordtheatremarquee 41% of the housing stock in this area was built prior to 1950. The median household income was $33,628.00 in 2000 and 6 % of the residents were age 65 or older. Racially, Blacks represent 77% of the population and Whites represent 19% of the population. Between 1990 and 2000 the overall population in the northwest area declined by 27%. According to the Detroit Health Department, in 2000 the age adjusted heart disease death rate for the Community Reinvestment Strategy cluster 8*, which includes the northwest area, was 398.2** per 100,000 population compared with 257.6** for the US and 418.4 for the entire city of Detroit.
